At 4:06 p.m., Berkeley Heights police responded to the 400 block of Park Avenue and quickly determined the teen was seriously injured, Berkeley Heights police said. The teen was transported to a nearby hospital via ambulance in critical but stable condition, police said.

The driver's attention was drawn away from the road, resulting in the collision, police said. The driver, whose name was not released by police, does not recall the moments prior to the crash and had a child inside the vehicle, police said.

Toxicology tests by the New Jersey State Police revealed that the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the collision, police said.

The driver was charged with reckless driving, careless driving and other traffic offenses, police said. The driver has been subjected to retesting by the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission to ensure future road safety, police said.
